Duke University Medical Center

Duke University Medical Center through the Department of Pediatrics and Duke Hospital  offers a 2-year academic Fellowship Program in Child Abuse and Neglect designed for Board Certified or Board Eligible Pediatricians. The Fellowship Program was developed in 2002 as an integral part of the DUMC inpatient Child Abuse and Neglect Consult Team and the outpatient Multidisciplinary Child Abuse and Neglect Evaluation Team at the Center for Child and Family Health-NC. The Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive clinical and academic training in all aspects of child abuse and neglect including multidisciplinary forensic evaluations for concerns of physical maltreatment, sexual maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, neglect and dependency and to prepare the physician in developing evidence-based expert medical opinions for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment and recommendations. The CCFH-NC houses the outpatient medical clinic for the Multidisciplinary Child Abuse and Neglect Evaluation Team, as well as the Child and Family Mental Health Programs and the Early Intervention Assessment and Treatment Programs. Training experiences also include hospital-based rotations with Pediatric Radiology, Neuro-Radiology and the UNC Burn Unit. Off-site rotations include training with the local Child Protective Services and Guardian ad Litem programs, as well as training in preparation for expert medical testimony in District and Superior Court. The Fellowship in Child Abuse and Neglect also provides a very compatible opportunity for completion of a Masters of Public Health or a Residency in Preventative Medicine through the nearby University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Development and completion of research projects in
the area of Child Abuse and Neglect, Infant and Child Fatality, Family Violence or Child Abuse Prevention within the 2-year Fellowship time frame is enhanced by on-going research projects at Duke University Medical Center, the University of North Carolina, the Center for Child and Family Health-NC and the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
